Red Dragon and Beech Forest

The red dragon is an iconic mythical creature featured on the Welsh flag. Red is an established colour for Wales. While there are many theories about its origin, I chose to represent the “passion” I felt for this project with red paper.  This project is an artistic collaboration that serves as a bridge between Japan and Himeji. I created a friendly red dragon character. For Red Dragon, I used paper cutouts to depict the creatures of the beech forest, starting with the sprout of a beech seed and unfolding throughout the seasons. I brought Red Dragon to Himeji to introduce the nature of Wales to everyone.

The theme of my work is nature. In recent years, I have been focusing on the interconnections between various creatures in nature.

Beech forests are one example of this. They form a community centred around a mother tree. A single beech tree cannot survive alone. And a forest cannot exist on beech trees alone. Looking underground, beech tree roots are connected by a network of fungi called mycelium. A forest does not exist on its own. A complex and diverse world (biodiversity) is created when underground and aboveground microorganisms and even larger creatures balance each other. Over the course of countless years,

A beech forest encompasses a world where all sorts of living creatures are connected. Perhaps this has something in common with our own world, as we are all living things.  Choosing beech trees as the theme of “connect” was a natural progression.

The base of the piece uses branches and wood generously provided by Farmers Kitchen Inuit, a Takasago-based restaurant that works on environmental issues and serves meals made with locally sourced and home-grown ingredients. And what connects the Welsh red dragon and Japan’s green birds is a shared empathy for nature that transcends borders. The rope, which symbolises connection, was made from grass that grew freely in my garden.

レッドドラゴンとブナの森

レッドドラゴンは、ウェールズの州旗に使われている象徴的な伝説上の生き物です。赤はウェールズの色として定着しています。色々な通説がありますが、私は、今回のプロジェクトに向けての「情熱」を赤色の紙で表すことにしました。州旗や様々な古書にも出ているように、権威、制圧を表す槍のような舌や尾は表わしません。このプロジェクトは、日本、姫路との架け橋となるアートコラボレーションです。友好的なキャラクターのレッドドラゴンを作り上げました。レッドドラゴンには、ブナの種が芽吹くところから始まり、四季を通して繰り広げられるブナの森の生き物たちを切り絵で表現しました。

私の作品テーマは自然です。近年は、自然界のさまざまな生き物がつながっていることに注目しています。

ブナ（Beech）の森は、その一つです。母なる木（Mother Tree）を中心にして一つのコミュニティを作り上げています。ブナの木は、１本だけでは生きていけません。そして、ブナの木だけでは森は成り立ちません。地下を見ると、ブナの木の根は、菌糸体（mycelium）という菌類のネットワークでつながっています。それだけでは、まだ森は成り立ちません。地下地上の微生物、さらに大きな生き物、それらがうまくバランスを取ってとても複雑で多様な世界（生物多様性biodiversity）ができあがるのです。気の遠くなるような歳月を経て。

さまざまな生き物がつながっているブナの森が包んでいる世界。それは、私たち人間の世界にも通じるものがあるのではないでしょうか。同じ生きているものたちだから。「つなぐ」というテーマにブナを選んだのは自然な流れでした。

作品の土台には、長年環境問題に取り組み、地元から調達したり、自ら育てたりした食材を使った料理を提供するファーマーズキッチン・イヌイットさんのご厚意による枝や木を使っています。そしてウェールズのレッドドラゴンと日本の緑の鳥たちをつなぐものは国境を越えた自然への共感。つなぐシンボルとしての縄は、私の庭に生え放題になっている夏草(No Mow May　生態系保護を目的にした草の根運動、初夏に芝生を刈らないを使いました。
